The Colts cut Peyton Manning in 2012… Think about that for a second.
One of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game. He gave that organization a Super Bowl, multiple MVPs, and more than a decade of winning.
Then they decided they were better off without him.
The Colts won some games after Peyton. They made the playoffs. They even made an AFC Championship… But they never won another Super Bowl.
Peyton did.
He went to Denver, broke records, won another MVP, went to two Super Bowls, and eventually walked away a champion.
The organization that decided he was no longer worth keeping is still waiting to get back.
There’s a lesson in that.
Organizations make mistakes about people all the time. They convince themselves the person is the problem. That they can replace them. That what they brought to the building wasn’t really that important.
Sometimes they’re right, and sometimes the person they cut goes somewhere else and proves exactly how wrong they were.
Getting cut doesn’t determine your value. Sometimes it just reveals how poorly your value was understood.
Peyton Manning didn’t need the Colts to prove he could still win.
Turns out, the Colts might have needed Peyton a little more than they thought.
