Foundation

Yesterday w/ my D-Line I told the guys something that applies just as much to business as it does football. I said, "We can run every drill. We can have a hundred fancy plays. But if our work ethic sucks, none of it matters." They nodded, they got it, they rest and improved their efforts.

Maybe that’s another element my parent's and my coach drilled into me. Maybe that's because I've never been the smartest guy in the room. Still not. I've never been the fastest. I've never been the strongest. I've never been the most naturally talented.

But I can outwork people. That's always been my edge. I can just not quit. It’s a choice.

When everyone else is looking for shortcuts, I'm looking for another rep. When people start getting comfortable, I keep going. I've learned that you don't have to be the most gifted person if you're willing to keep showing up when everyone else starts making excuses. I don't stop. It’s not special, it’s knowing what you can and can’t control. That's carried me a lot farther than talent ever could.

Coaches love talking about schemes. We argue over techniques. We spend hours drawing blitzes, stunts, and adjustments on whiteboards. We chase the newest idea because it feels like progress… But none of it survives contact with poor effort.

I've seen talented teams lose because they didn't want to work. I've also seen average teams beat more talented opponents because they refused to quit. Talent gets people excited. Work ethic keeps you in the fight long enough to win.

Business isn't any different. Companies spend millions on strategy. New software. Consultants. Leadership books. Organizational charts. Mission statements.

None of those things fix a lack of effort. None of them replace discipline. None of them create people who genuinely care. Culture isn't built by what's written on the wall. It's built by what people choose to do when no one is watching. That's why work ethic is the foundation. It's the first brick. Without it, accountability feels like punishment. Standards feel unfair. Coaching feels like criticism. Every conversation becomes harder because the foundation was never poured. With it, everything changes.

Coaching is received instead of resisted. Trust grows. People begin holding each other accountable before the boss has to.

The scheme starts working because the people are doing the work. Whether you're coaching football, leading a manufacturing team, or running a company, don't confuse complexity with effectiveness. You probably don't need another fancy play. or product. You probably need people willing to block, tackle, hustle, communicate, and finish.

I've built my career on one simple belief. I may not beat you with talent. But if you're counting on me to quit before you do, you're betting on the wrong guy.

The foundation isn't talent. It's work ethic. Everything else gets built on top of it.
